Chapter 3
"Honey we should take a vacation," I suggested to Theodore who was in our Jacuzzi whirlpool bathtub in the master bath. I was primping my hair in the vanity mirror in the bedroom.
"Well as soon as things slow down at the company, I will be sure to look into it," Theo replied. The relaxation in his tone told me that he was half-heartedly listening to me. I sighed out loud. What else needs to be in place with the business? I thought. At this point my husbands company is ranked number one in the country, we have enough money to take care of us for the rest of our lives. Every since he started this damn company it's seen more of him than I have.
It was never as bad as this when he was a surgeon. At least when Theodore was a surgeon he was able to stay at home the entire day on holidays. Now it's as if we both are living double lives. Although we are both married and share a loving family, I feel like I am more or less a single mother who is simply living off her ex husband's money and him living as an eligible bachelor able to pay his child support and come and go as he pleases. After fiddling with my hair some more, I dressed and headed downstairs to prepare dinner. I had asked Angelica, our maid, to take the weekend off for us to have some family time and for me to get a chance to cook my Theo's favorite southern meal.
I had to admit, I'm livid. I know that when people look at our marriage they believe that everything is wonderful. I love Theodore and his actions prove he loves me but I have to get away sooner or later or I'm going to drive myself crazy. After preparing some shrimp jambalaya and some Cajun seasoned catfish I called everyone into the dining area for dinner.
As usual Theodore started a conversation with the kids on how well school was going, who had received an A grade in a class. The children just talked away to their father about everything under the son. Alexia inquired about what kind of car her father was going to purchase her after she received her driver license. Theodore explained to his father how he wanted to try out for eighth grade football in a couple weeks and wanted his father to be at his tryouts. Mischa and Talia just sat quietly eating and listening to everyone speak followed by Lysette playful outbursts. I guess my husband noticed my picking over the rice on my plate.
"Baby, are you okay?" he asked.
"I'm fine," I responded, staring him dead in the eyes. He sat quietly for a minute at this point I'm sure he noticed something was wrong.
"Theo," Theo called out to his son, "when you get to school tomorrow I want for you to find out exactly when the football tryouts start, okay?"
"Yes, sir," Theo answered his father never noticing the tension between his father and myself at the dinner table.
"Alexia, after school I'll be here to take you to pick out your first car, okay?" He told Alexia. She replied that she understood followed by a quick shout "YES!"
My husband knew that I was upset but about what was what I knew that he was contemplating inside that mind of his. After the children had finished eating I asked them to excuse themselves from the table and go upstairs and get ready for bed. After Theo had finished eating he excused himself from the table as well and walked out the dining area and across the foyer into his office. He shut the door behind him. I gathered the empty plates and leftovers from the table and took them into the kitchen. After cleaning everything I retired upstairs to my bedroom.
Chapter 4
"Hi sweetheart," I answered the telephone in a seductive tone knowing that it was Theodore. I was expecting his phone call. He always made sure to call me no later than nine thirty because he wanted to make sure he seen his children off to bed.
"Hey baby, how are you doing?" Theo asked. I could hear a little excitement in his voice that he was talking to me as if we weren't together this morning.
"I'm fine, just thinking about you and how we are going to celebrate our anniversary," I replied.
"Yeah, it is approaching. What did you have in mind?" he asked. I could hear him tussling through some papers.
"Well I was thinking that we should fly to Italy. It's something that we have always talked about doing, right? I mean what do you think?" I asked Theo. He was silent for a second before speaking.
"That sounds like a great idea but very big plans don't you think? I mean that takes some time in planning and putting together Sanji," he answered.
"So what are you saying Theodore? I have already purchased the tickets for our flight. Our anniversary is next week," I was shocked at Theodore. I mean was he telling me no. He had never told me no before.
"Sanji, it's not a good time to fly out of the country. I promise you that we will go to Italy but right now is not good." he said. I was angry and I felt that I reserved the right to know why we couldn't fly out of the country. I know that I acting like a child but I really wanted to go.
"I want to know why," I yelled into the phone receiver.
"I am taking my wife on a vacation," he replied nonchalantly. I was hurt. I know that I shouldn't be because Theo has always taken care of my needs but for once I wanted to be first.
"So what are you saying?" I asked.
"I am saying that my wife is still my wife and she needs some time with her husband right now." he replied.
"Forget your wife," I yelled into the receiver not thinking first. For a minute I thought that he had hung the phone up in my face.
"If you ever speak of my wife in that tone again you and I are finished. My wife is not any of your concern and that you need not forget. I'll talk to you in the morning, okay?" he replied firmly. I knew that I had overstepped my boundaries. I had only made the mistake of bad mouthing Alessandra before during my miscarriage and even then he made no exceptions. I knew my place with Theodore.
Truthfully I was his mistress, a woman on the side. I know that he loves me and is even in love with me and had to admit I was jealous that Alessandra would always be first. I mean she was there first and she of course is his wife. If he somehow left this earth today this beautiful home that he purchased for us, my car and anything else that he has given me over the years she could take. I sighed out loud; this was the part of our relationship that I could never come face to face with.
"Yes, Theodore," I answered him.
"I love you," he said into the receiver as if our conflict did not just take place.
"I love you too," I said and our lines disconnected. I hung the phone up on my end as a tear came down my eye. But hell or high water if he wasn't going to Italy with me then I was for damn sure taking a friend or going by myself.
